Lecture dwells on healthcare issues

National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), SAS Nagar, celebrated the Fourth Dr Parvinder Singh Memorial Award Lecture on Tuesday.

The award was given to Dr Mohan D Nair, who is at present director, SAMI Labs, consultant WHO; ex-vice president, SPIC; fellow INAE and a scientist.

Dr Nair delivered a lecture on “Emerging trends in diseases management and new drug discovery”. In his lecture, Dr Nair focused on the realities of healthcare issues and diseases, their prevalence and management in Indian scenario. He elaborated the current drug discovery, development approaches and emergence of personalised medicines.

He also underlined the need of fresh approaches such as synthetic biology, genomics, proteomics and gene editing in drug research and development. Dr Nair concluded his lecture with emphasis on traditional medicines for healthcare.

NIPER, SAS Nagar, and Dr Nitya Nand, ex-director, Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow, also a scientist in drug discovery, instituted the award in the memory of Late Dr Parvinder Singh, former chairman, Ranbaxy Research Laboratories, Gurgaon.

As the 37th president of the IPC, Dr Parvinder Singh was instrumental in setting up the NIPER, the first national-level institute in pharmaceutical sciences in India.
