Chandigarh, June 16

A local court on Saturday granted bail to an advocate who was arrested on June 3 for allegedly firing in the air at the GMCH-32, Chandigarh.

Gagandeep Singh (32), an advocate in Mohali, was booked under Section 336 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27 and 59 of the Arms Act. He was granted bail on paying surety bonds of Rs 50,000.

The bail plea stated that Gagandeep had been falsely implicated by the complainants and that he had nothing to do with the case. The prosecution had opposed his bail on the grounds that if granted bail, Gagandeep could tamper with the evidence and pressurise the witnesses.

Reportedly, a resident of Banur was admitted to the hospital on May 31. Her in-laws had told her family that she had met with an accident. The woman’s uncle, Kirpal Singh, said the entire family had come to the hospital to meet her.

However, the woman’s family had an altercation with her in-laws in the hospital parking, following which Gagandeep, who is known to the woman’s in-laws, opened fire into the air.

Gagandeep, in his statement, alleged that the woman’s family tried to thrash him following which he rushed towards his car and fired into the air in self-defence.
