Mohali Vigilance sleuths today caught a cop working as a reader in the office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police-1 here red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs 20,000.

The suspect has been identified as Head Constable Maninder Singh. In a press release, DSP (Vigilance) Harvinder Pal Singh stated that Amarjit Singh, a resident of Bathinda, had filed a complaint with the Mohali Senior Superintendent of the Police that the suspect, posted as a reader in the office of DSP Simranjit Singh Lang, was allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from him for brokering a compromise with his maternal uncle over a property dispute.

The DSP (Vigilance) said the complainant settled the deal for Rs 50,000 and was to pay Rs 20,000 as its first installment today.

He said after receiving the complaint, they laid a trap and caught the reader red-handed accepting Rs 20,000 from the complainant as bribe.

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against Head Constable Maninder Singh at the Vigilance police station, Mohali. 

The DSP (Vigilance) said the suspect would be produced before the duty magistrate tomorrow and they would seek his police remand for further investigation into the case.
