Kharar civic body to charge water, sewerage cess from 29 colonies

The local Municipal Council (MC) has resolved to charge water and sewerage cess from residents of all the 29 colonies, which were taken over by the civic body from 2008 to 2016.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting of the MC, chaired by its president Anju Chander, here on Monday. The Kharar MLA, Kanwar Sandhu, who is an ex-officio member of the MC, also attended the meeting.

The MC Executive Officer (EO), Virender Jain, said an extensive survey of the 29 colonies would be undertaken and all residents would be made to pay to the MC for water supply and sewerage facilities.  

There was a lot of confusion over collection of water and sewerage cess in these colonies under the MC limits as some people were paying these charges to the colonisers while majority of residents were not paying at all, he added.

The MC also resolved to set up a new sewage treatment plant (STP) in the town. It was decided not to give the community centre of the MC located in Khanpur village on contract basis. Rather, the MC would run the facility on its own after the expiry of the present contract on June 30.

There was a heated discussion on an agenda item to give one acre land to the Rotary Club for social service work. Among others, MLA Kanwar Sandhu, MC vice-president Sunil Kumar and councillor Kuldeep Singh took part in the discussion. Later on, it was decided to refer this matter to the state government for seeking advice.

A proposal to pay Rs 10 lakh for special 10-year audit of the Kharar MC was rejected in the meeting. It was resolved that the state government should bear this amount from its own sources.

MLA Kanwar Sandhu raised the issue of shifting dumping ground from its present spot to some other place. He demanded that nobody should be allowed to throw sewerage water in the drain passing from Sunny Enclave to Khanpur.
