Kashmiri students agree to stay in Mullana

The Kashmiri students studying at MMDU in Mullana here on Sunday gathered outside a hostel and requested the administration to make arrangements for their travel from Mullana to Jammu.

The students claimed that after the Pulwama incident, the situation had turned tense here and they needed to go back to their native places for some days.

According to information, the students started shifting to the hostel on Saturday after a video, wherein a few youths were shown rudely asking a couple of Kashmiri students why they had not left yet and also hitting a boy with a shoe, went viral.

The students said they had been feeling insecure after the video went viral. Besides, some other students claimed that they could not afford to stay at the university hostel due to financial issues.

Later, Superintendent of Police Astha Modi and Deputy Commissioner Sharandeep Kaur reached the campus and managed to persuade the students. The students were assured that they would be given ample security and a separate hostel as well.

Sharandeep said, “The students have agreed to stay here and ample security is being provided to them.”

The DC, the SP and other officials decided to stay there till late night to boost the confidence of students.

Meanwhile, the police registered two FIRs — one against some unknown persons who had been threatening students in a video that had gone viral, while another against the persons who had hit a Kashmiri student on Saturday night.

The SP said, “Taking cognizance of both matters, two FIRs have been registered and the matter is being investigated. We have not received any complaint though. The students have settled and the situation is peaceful.”
