Jail inmate thrashed in police van

CHANDIGARH:A 36-year-old man, who was arrested under preventive measures, was allegedly thrashed by inmates in a police van on the way to the District Courts, Sector 43, from Burail Jail on Tuesday.

A 36-year-old man, who was arrested under preventive measures, was allegedly thrashed by inmates in a police van on the way to the District Courts, Sector 43, from Burail Jail on Tuesday. The inmate was seriously injured and was later hospitalised.

The victim, Sanjay, a resident of Colony No. 4, was arrested under preventive measures on November 30 following a family dispute and he was sent to jail.

The victim was being brought from jail along with other inmates, who were supposed to be produced in the District Courts, in a police van when he was badly thrashed.

The victim’s brother, Ajay, said, “Inmates started thrashing my brother while the police van was parked in the jail complex. “He raised the alarm and asked for help. However, nobody bothered to intervene and rescue him. The inmates kept on thrashing my brother till the time the police van reached the court in Sector 43.” 

He said the police staff did not stop the van on the way. The victim was supposed to be produced before the SDM at the Industrial Area, Phase I, following which he was brought to the SDM court from Sector 43.  The SDM gave him bail after which the victim’s kin admitted him to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.Ajay said his brother had suffered a fracture in one of the arms, injuries on the face and an injury on his ribs.  A complaint has been submitted at the Sector 49 police station.
