Mohali: Punjab Inter-District U-16 Cricket Championship for ML Markan Trophy will commence on April 17. In the first match, Chandigarh will face Rupnagar in a three-day encounter at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36. In the second match, Mohali will play against Amritsar at the Sector 16 cricket stadium. Patiala will lock horns with Bathinda at the Dhruv Pandove Stadium in Patiala. Jalandhar will face Ludhiana at the PAU grounds in Ludhiana. The three-day matches will be supervised by a PCA panel of umpires and scorers. According to Sushil Kapoor, spokesperson PCA, the members of the junior selection committee will also watch the matches at different venues. Pool A consists of Chandigarh, Rupnagar, Amritsar and Mohali, while Patiala, Bathinda, Jalandhar and Ludhiana will vie in Pool B. The top two teams of each group will play in the semifinals. The final will be a four-day match, from April 7 to 10. 

Arvinder, Tushita win open chess tournament 

Chandigarh: Arvinder Preet Singh claimed the first position in the open category on the concluding day of the 15th Open Chess Tournament at Learning Paths School, Mohali. Aman Preet Singh finished in the second position while Apoorva ended her campaign at the third spot. Tushita Chopra won the girls’ category title while Mitali Saini claimed the second position, followed by Shreshti Gupta in third. In the U-15 category, Piyush, Ajay Kumar Yadav and Jaspreet Singh claimed the top three positions, respectively. Pratyaksh Goel won the U-13 category title and Roohan Gupta claimed the second position. Manohav Sethi claimed the third position. In the U-11 category, Arnav Kushwaha, Shaunak Chaaudhary and Chinmay Jagga won the top three positions, respectively. In the U-9 category, Swastik Singhal, Precious Bansal and Amey Goel claimed the top three spots, respectively. Vanika won the first prize in the U-7 category. MP Verma was awarded the title of the best veteran and Tarundeep was adjudged the best-rated player. A total of 90 players —including 29 internationally rated —participated in the tournament.

Harvinder, Vippan help LWCC  log 85-run victory 

Chandigarh:Livewire Cricket Coaching Centre (LWCC) registered an 85-run win over Bebo Technologies in the Donate Eyes Win Hearts T20 Cricket Championship on Monday. Batting first, LWCC posted 163/4 in 20 overs. Harvinder Singh Nain (57) and Vippan Arora (50) shaped the team’s innings, while Arun Luthra (21) and Vikram (17) were the other noticeable scorers. Vikram Sharma and Anup Pahwa claimed a wicket each for the bowling side. In reply, Bebo Technologies posted 78 runs before they were bowled out in 18.1 overs. Anup Pahwa (19), Tarun Arora (12) and Himanshu Vohra (12) were the main scorers for the side. For the bowling side, Pankaj Kumar and Shahid Ahmed claimed three wickets each while Harvinder Singh Nain took two and Deepak claimed one. TNS
