Patiala, December 7

Government School teachers, who will take classes within four walls of the room, will now be seen showing their psychomotor skills on the playing field. For the first time the Education Department has decided to organise a sports meet for government school teachers in Punjab.

Interestingly, school principals and in-charges will also be seen sweating it out while competing along with school teachers.

“A first of its kind Inter-District Sports Tournament will give a platform to improve interaction among teachers. It will also improve competitiveness and health of the participants,” say officials.

Sports experts believe that such events will not only improve health of teachers, but also create a social cohesiveness in the education fraternity.

The three-day event will have 12 games, which include volleyball, kho kho, badminton, table tennis, basketball, chess, handball, football, hockey, tug of war, kabbadi and athletics.

According to a calendar released by the Education Department, the sports meet will be held from December 26 to 28 at Guru Nanak Bhawan of Punjab Agriculture University in Ludhiana.

To have an equal playing field for subject and physical education teachers (PET), the department has decided to allow the latter to participate in the meet. According to the guidelines, only one-third participation will be of sports teachers while two third subject teachers will compete in the sports meet.

“Such events will sensitise other subject teachers towards sports,”  said Krishan Kumar, Education Secretary.
