In 2017, 69% rape victims in city were minors

CHANDIGARH: Over 69 per cent of rape victims in Chandigarh in 2017 were minors. Of the total 65 rape incidents reported from the City Beautiful, 45 victims were below the age of 18, reveals the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Over 69 per cent of rape victims in Chandigarh in 2017 were minors. Of the total 65 rape incidents reported from the City Beautiful, 45 victims were below the age of 18, reveals the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Interestingly, in these cases, almost 96 per cent offenders were known to the victims.

The report states that a majority of the rape victims in the city were minors. As per the statistics, among them, a majority of the rape victims were in the age group of 12 to 16 years. While three victims were below the age of six, six victims were between 6 and 12 years of age, while 29 victims were between 12 and 16 years old and seven were between 16 and 18 years old.

The report further reveals that 20 victims were major of whom 16 were in the age group of 18 to 30 years, while the remaining four were between 30 and 45 years of age.

As per the records, 62 offenders were known to the victims. While nine were family members, 19 were among family friends, neighbours and employees, 34 were friends or live-in partners, who raped on the pretext of marriage, and only three offenders were not known to the victims. A total of 453 cases of crime, including rape, against women were reported in 2017.

As per the records, 100 incidents of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty were reported, 138 cases of kidnapping and abduction of women, 121 cases of cruelty by husband or relatives, eight cases of abetment to suicide of women, one case of dowry death and three cases of attempt to rape were reported from the city.
