The husband and son of a woman, who was booked for allegedly thrashing her five-year-old stepdaughter and putting her in a gunny bag last year, appeared in the court today. The duo supported the prosecution theory and once again stated that Jaspreet Kaur had committed the crime.
In December last year, her crime was recorded on video by her step son, which went viral on social media. She was arrested from a relative’s house in Sector 27 later. While the police had filed a challan in January, the trial began today after over nine months. The cross-examination of the father-son duo is scheduled for Tuesday.
Jaspreet Kaur was charged under Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act and Section 323 of the Indian Penal Code, while Section 308 A was added after directions from the court.
Kaur had married Manmohan Singh, a resident of Sector 29, in 2016. It was the second marriage for both of them. The victim’s 14-year-old brother had recorded the video of Kaur thrashing the five-year-old, whose leg was already in a cast. Kaur was repeatedly banging the child’s head on the floor and stuffing her in a gunny bag. The victim’s brother had shown the video to his father, who approached the Child Welfare Committee, Sector 19. The police were informed after which an investigation was initiated.
