Panchkula, March 19

As Panchkula residents complain of low water pressure in the city, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has written a letter to the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, seeking full share of water from the Kajauli waterworks.

A HUDA official said they had taken up the issue with the Chandigarh MC and soon a meeting would be held in this regard. While Panchkula is entitled to 6 million gallons per day (MGD), it is only getting 4.5 million gallons per day..

However, an official of the Chandigarh MC said there was a shortage of water supply from Kajauli these days, therefore they were unable to supply full share of water to Panchkula.

In 1983, an agreement was signed between Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana, wherein it was decided that water from Bhakra, through the Kajauli waterworks, would be supplied to Mohali, Chandigarh, Chandimandir and Panchkula.

As per the agreement, various phases of Kajauli were worked out. So far, the work on Phase I, II, III and IV has been completed. As per the agreement, 20 million gallons per day of water is to be made available from every phase.
