People suffer for want of basic amenities 

There is no doubt that among all satellite towns of the tricity, including Kharar, Baddi and Dera Bassi, Zirakpur is a place which has grown multifold in terms of group housing and shopping arenas, but this mushroomed growth has gone totally unproportional to the facilities and allied infrastructural development. The road network, local transport, electricity infrastructure and sewage disposal system are not sufficient to fulfil the needs of the residents of the town. Multi-storey residential towers and shopping arcades have converted this small town into a concrete jungle. Because of vested interests of developers, people are suffering a lot for want of even basic civic amenities. Builders are constructing flats with so many commitments before sale and just after handing over the flats, they deny the owners basic maintenance facilities. The authorities must ask developers to first provide infrastructural facilities on a par with already existing housing societies. —Sanjay Chopra, Mohali

Pedestrians’ safety ignored

Numerous people are killed in road accidents every year. People drive at breakneck speeds without thinking about the safety of other road users. More than 1,100 pedestrian deaths were reported on various roads in Punjab last year. Most of the roads in the country are dotted with potholes, manholes and open trenches. The police should take steps to ensure the safety of pedestrians. Moreover, parents should also not encourage underage driving.  —Jaspreet Singh, Patiala

PGI should take over other canteens too

This is in reference to a new report, “PGI takes over new OPD cafeteria”. The contractor had been fleecing the patients ever since he got the contract. He was also supplying substandard food items that tarnished the name of the premier institute. The welfare department of the institute has now been entrusted with the task of running the cafeteria. This will certainly give relief to the patients and their attendants. Besides, this will also enhance the income of the PGI. It would be better, if the department is given the responsibility of other canteens as well.  —SK Khosla, Chandigarh
