Pre-wedding celebrations turned into a tragedy for a family at Chhat village, near here, when the bridegroom was killed in a road accident last night at Zirakpur. Two of his friends also suffered injuries and were hospitalised.

The deceased has been identified as Gurtej Singh (31), a resident of Chhat village. Those injured are Manjit Singh and Parveen.

The marriage of Gurtej Singh, a driver, was scheduled for today. “Ladies sangeet” was going on in the house last night. Gurtej and his friends had gone to a nearby village. The incident took place when they were coming back towards the village in an Alto car.

Their car was reportedly hit by a truck near Zirakpur. Gurtej, who was sitting on front seat next to the driver, sustained injuries on his head and was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The police have registered a case against the truck driver, who is absconding after the incident, at the Zirakpur police station. — OC
