The committee on governance reforms in Panjab University considered the recommendations of the sub-committee on during a meeting here on Sunday.

It was decided to refer the recommendations to the Syndicate during its forthcoming meeting on July 7.

Prof Rajesh Gill, president, Panjab University Teachers’ Association, said reforms were needed, but all stakeholders — teachers, non-teaching staff and students — should be involved. She raised the issue of women reservation and said it was not uniform at all levels.

BJP president Sanjay Tandon said the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court and Punjab Chief Minister should continue to be ex-officio members.

Prof Navdeep Goyal, whose group holds a majority in the Syndicate and Senate, said: “On Sunday, a lot of people pointed out anomalies in the report. Either it should have been sent to the same committee or a new committee should have been formed. The sub-committee, while changing regulations, has also suggested changes in the PU Act, which is strange. The reforms are needed but they can’t be rushed through.” However, Senator Ashok Goyal spoke against the VC.—TNS
