Chandigarh: A 20-year-old girl, who was staying on rent at a house in Sector 21, reportedly hanged herself to death on Wednesday evening. The police said the victim was identified as Isha, a native of J&K. She was rushed to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where doctors declared her brought dead. Inquest proceedings into the incident have been initiated at the Sector 19 police station. TNS


Thieves target Bus passenger

Chandigarh: An unknown person stole a laptop and its charger from a bus at the ISBT in Sector 43. According to the police, the complainant, Vijay Bhadur, a resident of Sector 7, reported that someone made off with his laptop from a bus on January 4. A case has been registered in this connection at the Sector 36 police station. The police have begun an investigation into it. TNS


Cash stolen from purse

Panchkula: A woman employee of the Directorate Higher Education, Haryana Shiksha Sadan, Sector 5, has reported theft. The victim, Neelam Bisht, a data entry operator-cum-clerk, stated that someone stole Rs 12,000 from her purse during the lunch time on Wednesday. The suspect had also opened the purse of another employee, Mamta Rani, which came to light in the CCTV footage. A case has been registered under Section 380 of the Indian Penal Code at the Sector 5 police station. TNS


56-year-old man commits suicide

Ambala: A 56-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by lying on a railway track in Ambala Cantonment on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Rajesh Jolly, a resident of Kacha Bazaar, Ambala Cantonment. He was a jeweller. According to information, he was found dead near Bandhu Nagar around 11 am. After getting information, GRP officials reached the spot and shifted the body to the Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantonment. However, no suicide note was recovered from the spot. TNS


One booked for illegal mining

Dera Bassi: The police have booked a person on the charge of illegal mining at Kakrali village here. The accused, Naunihal Singh, a resident of Zirakpur, was yet to be arrested, said the police. According to sources, Mining Officer Bhag Singh told the police that they got information on Tuesday night about illegal mining at Kakrali village following which a team of the Mining Department went to the spot to cross check the allegations. The sources said the mining team found the land where sand was being illegally extracted beyond certain limit. The police were informed about it. A case has been registered against land owner Naunihal Singh under relevant sections of the Mining Act at the Dera Bassi police station. Further probe is on in the case. OC
