Chandigarh, February 17

With the term of the present governing body of the Chandigarh Golf Club (CGC) ending in April this year, election-related activities have begun on the club premises.

Though an official announcement on the poll schedule is yet to be made, former president Birinder Singh Gill and three-time captain of the course Sandeep Singh Sandhu have already declared their intentions to contest the top post in the club.

The club has several high-profile personalities as its members as its election are among the most talked-about event in the city. The club has approximately 1,800 eligible voters.

Present CGC president Ravibir Singh Grewal is out of the race as the standing committee of the club declared him ineligible for the election. As per the rules, no office-bearer can contest the election after holding the post for two consecutive years.

Gill had been president of the club for four one-year terms — from 2009-11 and 2014-16. He said the club needed a lot of improvement and he would contest the election to make it one of the best clubs in the country.

Sandhu has been associated with the club since his school days and played several national and international tournaments. He was the captain of the Indian team at the World Amateur Championship held in South Africa in 2006. He said he would focus on the development of the golf course and providing training to budding golfers. Sandhu said the club should become a centre where young golfers get world-class training facilities to prepare them for international tournaments.
