Ghazal maestro spells magic

CHANDIGARH:Retaining the freshness in his voice, Bollywood playback singer and ghazal maestro Vinod Sehgal gave a memorable finale to the concert, ‘Ghazal Usne Chhedi’, organised by the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi and the North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala, at Tagore Theatre here on Thursday.

Retaining the freshness in his voice, Bollywood playback singer and ghazal maestro Vinod Sehgal gave a memorable finale to the concert, ‘Ghazal Usne Chhedi’, organised by the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi and the North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala, at Tagore Theatre here on Thursday. 

Vinod Sehgal, a disciple of Jagjit Singh, opened with a tribute to legendary Punjabi poet Shiv Kumar Batalvi, through his ghazal ‘Sanu Prabh Ji’, followed by KK Nayyar’s ghazal ‘Chehre Par Kuch Likha Hua Hai’.

Audience greeted Sehgal as he rendered ‘Hein aur Bhi Duniya Mein’ and a ghazal from his serial ‘Mirza Ghalib’. He then presented ghazals authored by various poets, including ‘Jis Jagah Rehte’ by BD Kaliya Humadum, ‘Kisi Ki Chah Mein’ by Shams Tabrezi and ‘Raat Dhalne Lagi’ by Sushil Hasrat Narelvi.

‘Ek aur Durghatna’ at Navrang Theatre

Chandigarh: The Impact Arts staged a Hindi play, ‘Ek aur Durghatna’, during the ongoing TFT national winter theatre festival at Navrang Theatre here on Thursday. Based on Hindi adaptation of classic ‘An accidental Death of an Anarchist’ by Italian Nobel Prize winner ‘Dario Fo’ by NSD alumnus Amitabh Shrivastava. It was directed by Baninderjit Singh Bunny. The play opened at a police chowki where Inspector Vajpayee interrogates an intelligent, clever, sneaky fraudster maniac, who consistently outwits the inspector, the judicial officers, a seasoned journalist during several rounds of interrogation. The play was full of situational comic acts with suspense pervading in every move of the maniac.  A ‘Ru Ba Ru’ session with academician and senior visual maestro Dr Sadhna Sangar was organised, along with a photo exhibition by the Photo Journalist Welfare Association, Chandigarh.
