Chandigarh, July 14

The problem of solid waste is once again posing a threat to residents and is raising a big stink as the Jaypee garbage plant is filled with unprocessed garbage and is finding it difficult to take further waste from the city.

While the Municipal Corporation has directed the plant management to take all garbage, the latter alleged that the MC was sending unsegregated waste, which also included horticulture waste.

Last week, KK Yadav, MC Commissioner, had directed the management of the garbage plant to accept the entire waste from the city. Sources said since the plant failed to process all waste, heaps of garbage had accumulated inside the plant.

Rain has posed additional challenge to the plant management. The city generates about 450 tonnes of garbage daily, half of which is organic waste. Devinder Singh Babla, Congress councillor, said despite making tall claims, the MC had failed to solve the garbage problem.
