Gangster Nehra booked for Rs 3-cr extortion call to chemist

CHANDIGARH: In the case pertaining to an extortion call to a city-based medical store owner, the FIR has named gangster Sampat Nehra.

In the case pertaining to an extortion call to a city-based medical store owner, the FIR has named gangster Sampat Nehra. The FIR was registered on a complaint of the owner of Kumar Brothers, a chemist shop in Sector 11, at the Sector 3 police station.

According to the complaint of Ashwani Kumar, the WhatsApp call was made from a number outside India and Rs 3 crore was demanded. The complainant has told the police that the caller claimed to be Sampat Nehra. The call was received around 10 days ago, he said.

Acting on the information, Kumar was provided with two armed security personnel by the operation cell of the Chandigarh Police. Sources said cops were also keeping vigil around Kumar’s house. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter and are trying to track the number which was used to make the call.

A member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, Nehra is one of the most wanted criminals in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana. In Chandigarh, he is wanted in an attempt-to-murder case, in Punjab for a carjacking case in Patiala and in Haryana for freeing a prisoner in Panchkula.

He was active in student politics at DAV College where he was the campus president of the Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU). Nehra, a national-level decathlon silver medallist, is the son of an Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Chandigarh Police.
