Holi celebrations turned sour for the families of three youths who died when the motorcycle they were riding was allegedly hit by a rashly driven car on a railway overbridge (ROB) near DAV School here on Thursday evening.

The deceased have been identified as Malkit Singh and Harvinder Singh, alias Kaka, of Mubarikpur, and Vishal of Bhankarpur.

The police said the victims were going towards Dera Bassi on a motorcycle. As soon as they reached the ROB, a car, which was also heading in the same direction, reportedly hit their bike in its rear.

Eyewitnesses said Malkit Singh, who was driving the bike, died on the spot as his head hit the median. Some passersby rushed Harvinder Singh and Vishal, who were riding pillion, to the Civil Hospital where doctors declared them brought dead.

None of the victims was wearing helmet. The car driver fled from the spot, leaving the victims in pain on the road, said an eyewitness.

A police team from Dera Bassi reached the spot and started investigations.

Sources said after celebrating Holi at Bhankarpur, the victims left for Dera Bassi on Malkit’s bike. They did not inform their parents that they were going to Dera Bassi. Their families got the tragic news later in the evening.
