Mohali, November 6

The police have arrested a 40-year-old man on a charge of raping a seven-year-old girl, who lives in his neighbourhood here.

The suspect, Neetu, allegedly raped the victim, a Class 1 student of a private school, repeatedly for the past few days. The police arrested him yesterday night from the Nada bridge near Nada village here.

Inspector Bhagwant Singh, SHO of the Nayagaon police station, said the suspect was a father of five children, including three daughters.

“Neetu was a driver with the MC where the parents of the victim work as safai karamcharis. The suspect was living alone on the upper storey of the house in which the victim’s family was putting up. He raped the victim repeatedly for the past few days when her parents were out for work,” said the SHO.

He said the suspect’s family was living at his native place. The crime came to light when the girl narrated her ordeal to her mother yesterday.

“We have booked him under Section 376 of the IPC and Sections 4 and 8 of the POCSO Act. He was produced before the court today, which remanded him in judicial custody,” said Inspector Bhagwant Singh.
