Drug control officials raided a godown in the Zirakpur area on Thursday evening and seized consignments of fake medicines worth Rs 5 lakh. These medicines were being manufactured at the godown and then supplied to other cities.

Amit Lakhanpal, drug inspector, Mohali, said acting on a tip-off, a team of the Drug Department raided Vatave Healthcare Unit in Zirakpur and seized consignments of fake medicines with labels of other pharmaceutical company in Uttarakhand.

The officials said they had been manufacturing fake medicines in a godown at Babhat village near here for the past several years. The medicines, which were being distributed in Uttarakhand, were being manufactured without any approval from the drug authorities and the owner of the godown did not have any licence for the same.

The team seized 12,000 tablets of Azithromycin and 12,000 tablets of Ofloxacin. These were being manufactured using fake labels bearing the name of a pharmaceutical company in Uttarakhand.

The seized medicines had been sent for testing. Under the Drugs and Cosmetic Act, nobody can manufacture health supplements without a valid licence, the officials said.

Meanwhile, legal proceedings have been initiated against the violator as per the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetic Act.
