Chandigarh: Residents of the tricity will get respite from the scorching heat as thunderstorm/rain is likely on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. “Thunderstorm/ rain accompanied by winds exceeding speed 45 kmph is likely to hit the southwestern parts of Punjab and Haryana, including Chandigarh. Isolated hailstorm has also been predicted on these three days,” said officials of the Chandigarh Meteorological Department. During the next two days, the maximum temperature is likely to come down to 42°C. Weather will be partly cloudy with likely thundery development and light rain. TNS

Two run over by train

Chandigarh: Two persons were killed in train-related mishaps in the city two days ago. According to the government railway police, a man aged 25-35 years reportedly committed suicide by jumping in front of the Jan Shatabdi train near the level crossing in Sector 19, Panchkula. His identity is yet to be ascertained. The police said the train driver saw the man jump in front of the train. Meanwhile, a man aged 40-45 years died after being hit by a train near the Industrial Area police station. The railway police said they were yet to ascertain whether it was an accident or the man jumped in front of the train. “The man, who seemed to be a trader, was wearing blue trousers,” said a police official. Accident victim dies at hospital

Chandigarh: A 40-year-old resident of Bapu Dham Colony succumbed to his injuries at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, here. Injured Charanjit Singh, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, was admitted to the hospital after he was hit by an unknown vehicle in the Industrial Area on June 10. The police said a case under Section 304-A of the IPC had been registered at the Industrial Area police station against the unknown vehicle driver. TNS

Woman arrested with poppy husk

Kharar: The Sadar police have arrested a woman of Simbel Majra village here after 5 kg of poppy husk was recovered from a bag she was carrying. Sub-Inspector Sukhmander Singh, incharge, Anti-Narcotic Cell, Mohali, said the accused, Karamjit Kaur, was caught by cops at a naka near Peer Sohana village. She was produced in a local court on Saturday, which sent her to judicial custody. OC
