Unhappy over workload, Nabha Executive officer (EO) Rakesh Kumar tendered his resignation on Monday. However, it was not accepted.

Insiders say political interference in the Local Bodies Department has led to the development. Surjit Singh Rakhra of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) demanded a probe into the entire episode.

The EO in conversation with The Tribune said, “I have charge of Nabha Municipal Council, and additional charge of Bhawanigarh and Amargarh councils which are in Sangrur district.”

“We constantly hold meetings. I requested officials concerned to shift me to another MC or give me a charge of councils within the same district,” said Rakesh.

The EO said he submitted his resignation on Monday, however, it was not accepted as it needed to come through a proper channel. “I have to submit my resignation through the Deputy Director, Patiala. I will submit my resignation on Wednesday.”

He added that he had requested a number of MLAs, including a Minister to get transferred.

The EO said, “There are rumors that someone in the department sought money from me which is not true.”

“Political pressure is mounting in the department,” said an insider.

Rakhra said honest officers were reeling under tremendous pressure from their political bosses. He said Local Bodies’ Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu should be aware of what is happening in his department.
