Chandigarh, May 26

After numerous protests and a hunger strike by three students of the evening studies department, the final number of detained students has come down to 153. Initially, almost 600 students were detained by the department for not having the minimum required 75 per cent attendance.

Numerous students of the department had protested outside the Vice Chancellor’s office for days and three had even started a hunger strike. However, after much deliberation with the Dean of University Instruction (DUI), most of the students were cleared. Their medical certificates and participation in various events was considered for the same.

The teachers and the chairperson of the department had come under the scanner after students made allegations of favouritism to clear some students. However, after investigation into the matter, no such case was found.
