Members of the ETT-TET Pass Teachers’ Union have urged the government to implement the principle of ‘equal pay for equal work’ as per the Supreme Court (SC) orders. The members claimed that the contractual teachers recruited by the state government are working on nominal salary despite the SC verdict in their favour. The members from Patiala district were here to attend a meeting to choose a new governing body of their union.
Notably, the apex court has given the verdict saying that the principle has to be made applicable to those engaged as daily wagers, casual and contractual employees who perform the same duties as the regulars.
District president of the union Gurpreet Singh Sidhu said most of the ETT teachers had been appointed in far-flung areas and they were living in rented accommodations which add to their woes.
“Capt Amarinder Singh had promised to deploy teachers in schools nearest to their homes, but he had failed to keep his promise and teachers are bearing the brunt,” Sidhu said.
The union members claimed that during the recruitment process of ETT teachers during the tenure of the Akali-BJP rule, many posts in various reserved categories were left vacant.
They claimed that they had held several meetings with administrative officials and politicians regarding their demands but they failed to resolve their issues.
