As many as eight residents of Adarsh Nagar in Dera Bassi are reported to be suffering from diarrhoea due to contamination of water. “Sewage has mixed with water in the supply lines, due to which people have fallen sick,” said residents. They alleged that leakage in the water pipeline might have been caused while digging during the ongoing work to repair sewerage in the area.

However, officials of the Municipal Council (MC) denied that the contamination of drinking water was the reason behind the people falling sick. The water supplied to the area was fit for drinking, they added.

Meanwhile, teams of the Health Department visited the area on Thursday. Besides distributing chlorine tablets, teams also collected samples of water stored in houses. Reports of samples are awaited. The Health Department on Wednesday issued an advisory for residents to prevent further spread of the disease.

District epidemiologist Deepti said the Health Department was taking all precautionary measures to prevent further spread of diarrhoea. Besides distribution of medicines, teams of the department had advised residents to drink boiled water and avoid consumption of eatables prepared by substandard companies, she added.

Dera Bassi MCExecutive Officer (EO) Sukhjinder Singh Sidhu, denied reports of sewage getting mixed with potable water. “I have already written to the Water Supply and Sewerage Department to finish the repair work at the earliest,” he added.
