Drona stuns Sushant, claims title

CHANDIGARH:Drona Walia stunned top seed Sushant Dabas of Haryana to win the boys’ U-18 title on the concluding day of the CLTA-AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament here on Friday.

Drona Walia stunned top seed Sushant Dabas of Haryana to win the boys’ U-18 title on the concluding day of the CLTA-AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament here on Friday. 

The Uttarakhand youngster made his intentions clear from the beginning of the match as he pegged back Dabas with his accurate service and deep rallies. After wrapping up the opener 6-3, Walia was looking good to seal the match in the second set but the top seed fought back bravely to seal the set 7-6(3).    

Walia though kept his composure to win the decider 7-5 and claim the title.

In the boys’ U-16 category, top seed Chirag Dhuan of Haryana continued his impressive show as he packed off Gujarat’s Dhanya Shah in straight sets to clinch the title. Dhuan won 6-2 6-4.

Mixed day for Renee

Top seed Renee Singla of Haryana, meanwhile, downed state-mate and fifth seed Anjali Rathi 6-2 6-3 to win the girls’ U-16 title.

Renee, however, failed to overcome Haryana’s  Kaavya Sawhney in the girls’ U-18 final. She lost 4-6 3-6.

In the boys’ U-16 doubles, third seeds Sarthak Gandhi and Ajay Singh upset top seed pair of Ajay Kundu and Aditya Nandal 6-1 2-6 10-6 to win the title.

Top seeds Sushant Dabas and Krishan Hooda combine registered a 6-3 2-6 10-6 win over Deepender Grewal and Krish Patel in the boys’ U-18 doubles final, while Vanshika Chaudhary and Sandeepti Singh Rao rallied from a set down to beat Shreya Chakraborty and Prinkle Singh 4-6 6-3 10-4 in the girls’ U-18 title clash.
