Chandigarh, September 17

The UT Police Department has initiated a disciplinary action against DSP (Traffic) SPS Sondhi, who has been accused of assaulting a traffic violator in Sector 22 here on September 14.

Confirming the development, UT SSP Traffic Shashank Anand said a disciplinary action has been initiated against the DSP and he had been served a displeasure memo.

During the enquiry, it was also found that the DSP was not wearing uniform at the time of the incident. He was also not wearing a body camera that was necessary at the time of issuing a challan.

Shiv Nath, a nursing officer, had alleged that he was assaulted by the DSP in Sector 22. He was returning after attending a parent-teacher meeting with his two children and wife on a motorcycle when he was stopped by the DSP since his wife and two children, aged 4 and 10, were not wearing helmets.

Shiv Nath had alleged that he was punched on his nose by the DSP, while the DSP had claimed that Nath held his collar and when he opened the door of the vehicle, the door hit Nath's helmet following which he suffered an injury. The incident led to high drama at the spot when people gathered in support of Nath.

Both Nath and the DSP filed a complainant against each other at the Sector 22 police post. Following the incident, a factual report on the incident was also sent by the DSP (Central) to the SSP (Traffic). — TNS
