Diarrhoea cases on the rise in city

With the mercury and humidity levels rising, which are conducive for the growth of bacteria, more and more city residents are falling prey to diarrhoea and gastrointestinal infections. Going by the daily registrations at the general medicine OPDs in city government hospitals, at least 25 new cases of such infections are being reported at each centre.

This is a common season for such infections. Dehydration and contaminated water are the prime cause of such problems, says Dr Gopal Bhardwaj, Head, Department of Internal Medicine, Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16.

The cases are more common among children and the elderly. At least two to three litres of liquids should be taken in a day. Residents should also avoid beverages being sold on the roadside as the water used in these could be exposed to bacteria. 

These cases reported so far in the city are not epidemiologically linked (reported from a common area), said officials.
