Chandigarh, November 18

Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Harmohan Dhawan today formally joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the  presence of its senior  leaders    from the Punjab unit.

Though  no  official  announcement of his candidature   for the Lok Sabha seat was  made today, leaders   gave an indication that  the party would field him in the  next elections.

A large number of Dhawan’s supporters were present  at the function  held   at his  residence in Sector   9.  Dhawan’s decision to join AAP came after he met party convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal last  month.

Addressing a rally,  Dhawan   attacked the BJP and the Congress,   saying that  both  parties  did not fulfil promises made to people before coming to power. Dhawan had joined the BJP before the last parliamentary elections and was denied the ticket for the Lok Sabha seat at the last moment.

Thereafter, his relationship with local leaders of the party remained strained for various reasons. Dhawan  said AAP would provide an alternative to the BJP and the Congress.

AAP had fielded actor Gul Panag   from the Chandigarh seat during the last Lok Sabha elections and  had got  over one lakh  votes. Bhagwant  Mann, MP, said the party would win the  election from Chandigarh. Durgesh Pathak, a senior  leader  of the  party, said Arvind  Kejriwal  would hold a rally in the  city  in January.
