The Organised Crime Control Unit (OCCU) of the Punjab Police claimed to have solved the murder case of Darbara Singh Seona, a Punjabi columnist and General Secretary of the Shiromani Akali Dal (International).

Darbara Singh was shot dead by unknown assailants in 2008 and a case was registered at the Civil Lines police station in this regard.

The police have arrested Daljit Singh, a resident of Sular, and Pushpinder Singh Tau, a resident of Mimnabad village in Jind, in the case.

Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Intelligence (OCCU), said the motive behind the killing was a family dispute. The police said Darbara had also written a controversial article in a vernacular newspaper which had led to suspicion over involvement of radicals in the case. Officials said they had rooted out involvement of radicals in the matter ‘for the time being’.

The IGP Intelligence (OCCU) said, “Both accused confessed to the crime and revealed the names of other accused, including Amanpreet Singh, a resident of Near Prince Plaza Mithupur road, Jalandhar, who is a proclaimed offender and a notorious gangster.”

Further investigation was on and efforts were made to nab the other accused, he added.
