An 18-year-old girl, a non-medical student of Class XII at Sri Guru Harkrishan Model Senior Secondary School at Chandigarh, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her study room at her residence at Mandher Nagar here this afternoon.

The victim, Loveleen Kaur, was allegedly apprehensive about her result, scheduled to be declared tomorrow, said the police.

The police said she was reportedly tense as she had not fared well in one of her exams. “She was with her cousin at the house while her parents were away to Kurali at the time of the incident,” said the police.

The victim’s father, Pakhar Singh, a manager with the Oriental Bank of Commerce, said he, along with his wife, left the house for Kurali at around 11 am. At that time, the victim and her cousin were in the house.

The victim’s father told the police: “When we returned at around 2 pm, my niece opened the door. We asked her about Loveleen, and she said that Lovleen was studying in her study room. The door of the room was found bolted.”

When the door was broken, the victim was found hanging, said the police.

The victim’s father claimed that she was dejected as she had not fared well in one of her exams. “I had told her not to lose heart,” said her father with tears in his eyes.

He said she was a bright student, who had scored 94 per cent in Class X.

The police have kept the body in the mortuary at the Kharar Civil Hospital after initiating inquest proceedings in the case.
