The district administration has registered more than 21,000 Drug Abuse Prevention Officers (DAPOs), who are playing an important role in curbing the menace of drugs abuse.

This was stated by Dr Prashant Kumar Goyal, Deputy Commissioner (DC), Fatehgarh Sahib, while presiding over a meeting of the DAPOs here today.

He said 2,466 sarpanches, panches, block samiti and zila parishad members, 11,827 at sub-division level and 7,090 through the District Sanjh Kendra had been registered as the DAPOs.

“The people’s participation in the war against drugs is ensured through DAPOs by organising seminars and workshops. The DAPOs create awareness among the people about the ill effects of drugs. They deal with addicts and their families in a sympathetic way to motivate them for the proper treatment,” he added.

“Moreover, DAPOs also promote social welfare activities. The state government has been providing free treatment to drug-affected people through its de-addiction centres and OOAT clinics,” he said.

“To save children from this menace parents should spend plenty of time with them. Parents must adopt friendly approach towards their wards so that they do not hesitate to share their activities and views with them,” the DC added.

He called upon social organisations and everyone to contribute to eradicate the drug menace.
