Mohali: In the case of a motorcycle being taken away at gunpoint in Phase VII here on Thursday, the police have arrested one person. Mohali SP (D) HS Atwal said the arrested person had been identified as Lakhwinder Singh while his accomplice Satkar Singh was at large. The police have recovered a pistol (.32 bore) and six cartridges from the possession of Lakhwinder. The police had already recovered the stolen motorcycle, which was taken away from Gurpreet Singh and Parminder Singh at gunpoint on Thursday morning. The accused had taken away the motorcycle to use it in some bigger crime in the area, said the police. Lakhwinder has spent six years in jail in a murder case. “He had come in contact with Satkar Singh from Moga and Jindi from Nawanshahr in the jail. They had planned to commit crimes in Mohali and Chandigarh,” said the police, adding that both Satkar and Jindi also face murder cases. TNS

Centre for judicial officers’ kids

Ropar: Punjab and Haryana High Court judge-cum-executive chairman of Punjab Legal Services Authority Justice SS Saron inaugurated a baby care centre meant for the children of officers/officials of the district judicial courts  as per Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act in the building of alternative disputes resolution (ADR) centre here on Saturday. Ropar District Legal Services Authority, has become the first in the region to have established such a centre after the passing of the notification under the Act. Justice Saron said as per the Act, it was mandatory for every establishment employing 50 or more employees to have a baby care room. He said the women employees would be permitted to visit the crèche four times during the day. OC

More rain in store

Chandigarh: Light showers hit isolated areas in the tricity on Saturday. The maximum temperature stayed at 39.5 degrees Celsius. The Met Department has predicted rain over the next three days. There seems to be no drop in the maximum temperature which is expected to stay between 38 and 39 degrees Celsius. In the following days, heat-wave is likely to intensify and the temperature may exceed 40 degrees Celsius. TNS

International Nurses Week

Chandigarh: The department of nursing, GMCH-32, celebrated the International Nurses Week. The inaugural function on May 12 commenced with the lighting of a lamp by Director Principal Prof AK Janmeja. Activities, such as best ward competition, slogan contest, rangoli competition and health talks, were held. At the valedictory function, Director Principal Prof AK Janmeja was the chief guest. He inaugurated a blood camp in the blood bank of the GMCH. A cultural programme by nursing students was also organised. Medical Superintendent Prof Ravi Gupta appreciated the contribution of nurses and advised them to work with dedication. The valedictory function ended with a vote of thanks by Nursing Superintendent Kiran Bala. TNS
