Chandigarh, October 23

In a major drive against the illegal sale of firecrackers, a team of the UT Administration, led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Saurabh Mishra, sealed a shop and two rooms for storing firecrackers illegally in Sector 42, Attawa, here.

As many as 12 boxes of crackers were also seized from SCO No. 45 in Sector 47. The action was taken after the department got a tip-off that firecrackers were sold illegally in the markets.

Mishra said the owner of Garg Departmental Store had the licence to store crackers till 2023. But instead of storing the firecrackers at the place mentioned in the licence, he had stored these illegally in two rooms close to the shop. Sources said the cost of the seized firecrackers was estimated to be around Rs 15 lakh.

The raids carried out in the evening highlighted the nexus of illegal sale of firecrackers in markets. There were no fire extinguishers in the shops where firecrackers were stored.—TNS
