Chandigarh, December 1
A large number of city Congress workers took to streets today against the rising prices of onion. Wearing garlands of onion, garlic and ginger, they condemned the BJP government for its failure to control the vegetable rates.
The protesters, led by city Congress president Pardeep Chhabra, also staged a dharna at the fruit and vegetable market in Sector 26.
Chhabra said before becoming Prime Minister, Narendra Modi made big promises of reducing inflation and putting hoarders and black marketeers behind bars. However, today the prices of these things are skyrocketing, he added.
Lashing out at MP Kirron Kher, the Congress leader said city residents had elected her to fight for women’s rights, but she disappeared from Chandigarh after winning the election.
Chhabra said the prices of onion, garlic and ginger had upset household budget, and if being a woman, Kirron Kher could not understand the pain of women she had no right to hold the MP’s post.
Former Mayor Subhash Chawla said onion was a daily-use item, but it now became a luxury.
Mahila Congress president Deepa Dubey said if the Modi government failed to curb the increasing prices, the Mahila Congress workers would gather at MP Kirron Kher’s house and force her to speak for the city residents.
Congress leaders who took part in the protest include Harphool Kalyan, Harmohinder Singh Lucky, Bhupinder Badheri, Gurbax Rawat, Rupinder Kaur Gujral, Vinod Sharma, Sandeep Bhardwaj, Shashi Shankar Tiwari, Ajay Joshi and Gurcharan Das Kala.
