Nabha, June 7

Members of the local unit of the Congress party protested against the Central Government on Thursday for rising fuel prices. They also submitted a memorandum which was received by Tehsildar Sukhjinder Singh Tiwana.

Led by Nabha block president Sarv Mohit Dalla, the party workers burnt an effigy of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

Addressing the protesting workers, Dalla said the Modi government had failed on all fronts and added that skyrocketing prices of petrol and diesel had put extra burden on common man as well as farmers.

He said the Modi government did not fulfil its poll promises made to farmers before the Lok Sabha elections.

He said the Central Government also proposed anti-farmer land acquisition bill, which they failed to bring into legislation and went ahead with trade facilitation agreement at the World Trade Organisation.

He said the government made commitment to reduce subsidies on agriculture and falsely claimed that farmers were being given 50 per cent profit on the production cost.

He said the formula of cost calculations did not include expenses incurred by farmers and now the government had added burden on farmers by raising the fuel prices.

He warned the government that they would be forced to intensify their stir if the prices of fuel were not reduced.

Gurpreet Singh Dharmsot, youth Congress leader and son of Cabinet Minister Sadhu Singh Dharmsot, and members of the youth Congress were among those who participated in the protest.
