Chandigarh, January 10

The woman arrested for duping goldsmiths in the city used to wear branded clothes and even take her two kids and a servant along to make it appear like she belonged to a well-off family.

Jaspreet Kaur, the suspect, was arrested last week for cheating at least three local jewellers. She purchased jewellery and duped the store owners by showing fake messages of online payments.

Sub-Inspector Sarita Roy, Incharge, Neelam police post, Sector 17, said Jaspreet, a Class XII pass-out, wore branded clothes and always took a woman servant along to impress upon her targets. “She also used to take her two sons, a four-year-old and an eight-month-old, along who were also dressed in branded products,” the SI added.

The servant or any other person who accompanied the woman never suspected that her intentions were to dupe jewellers.

The police investigations revealed that the woman had purchased a two-bedroom flat at Omega City in Kharar with the ill-gotten money.

The police said the suspect was a hard nut to crack. “She didn’t reveal information about her family or past during interrogation,” said a police official.

Her husband Gurmeet Singh is at large. He did not even come forward to take the custody of the kids. “The woman also lied about her husband’s profession. Earlier, she said he worked in some press. Later, she claimed he is a motor mechanic. We are still not sure what he does,” the police said.

The suspect was aware that she cannot sell jewellery easily. So she used to take loan against gold from finance companies. She had bills of the jewellery sold to her, which helped her in getting loan from finance companies.
