Six members of a family travelling in a Tavera SUV had a narrow escape after their vehicle caught fire all of sudden near the TDI City traffic light point on Airport Road here late this evening.

The incident took place around 10.15 pm. The SUV was being driven by Gurjit Singh. A car driver told Gurjit about the smoke emanating from his vehicle. “As soon as the occupants came out of the vehicle, fire engulfed the SUV,” said JP Singh, an eyewitness.

He said the car occupants were lucky as they came out of the vehicle well in time. Otherwise, some mishap could have occurred.

Singh claimed that he called a PCR at 100, but nobody responded to the phone calls there. Meanwhile, a team of the local police reached the spot.

The SUV, bearing Haryana registration number, burnt completely within a few minutes.

According to the police, the family belonged to Dhanoa village in the Mullanpur area and was coming from the Kharar side to Mohali.

All six occupants, including 4 men and 2 women, were safe, said the police.

“The family came to Chajju Majra village to attend a wedding. They were on the way when their SUV caught fire,” said Inspector Manphul Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of the Balongi police station.
