Chandigarh, August 6

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has started planning to make the city number one in cleanliness in the country. A meeting on “Chandigarh banega swachhta mein number 1” and the star-rating system for a garbage-free city was held. The meeting was chaired by Davesh Moudgil, Mayor, and attended by MC Commissioner KK Yadav and other senior officers of the civic body.

During the meeting, the Mayor said a coordinated approach with decentralised solutions needed to be put in place for tackling the generation of municipal solid waste in the city. He said without ensuring the participation of citizens, specifically to change their mindset towards a garbage-free city, it was difficult to achieve the goal.

The Mayor asked the officers to develop a pilot project to collect garbage through MC vehicles where door-to-door collectors were not required. He said washrooms and water connections should be provided to all sehaj safai kendras. Regarding the segregation of hazardous waste, he said provision for e-waste bins should be planned throughout the city.

The Mayor said night sweeping should be planned on V5 roads. He said options should be explored to hand over sweeping of markets to market welfare associations.

The Mayor said workshops would be organised towards a garbage-free Chandigarh. The first such workshop for councillors would be held on August 13 and 14.

The Mayor also discussed the plan of study tours of councillors and officers and asked the officers to plan these tours from August 19 to 22. He said all teams would prepare study reports and place these in the forthcoming House meeting for detailed discussions. The Commissioner briefed the Mayor and the officers about the parameters of the star-rating system for a garbage-free city.
