A 15-year-old girl from Dhakoli in Zirakpur allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire at a park in Sector 7 here this evening.

The victim, a Class X student of a school in Sector 11 here, poured petrol and set herself ablaze. Passersby tried to douse the flames. She was taken to the Civil Hospital, Sector 6, from where doctors referred her to the PGI, where she died. The police said she had suffered 90 per cent burns. Police officials, including DCP Kamal Deep Goyal and ACP Nupur Bishnoi, and a forensic team reached the spot. The police found the victim’s purse at the site. It contained a knife, a mobile phone and travel tickets of Manali.

The victim’s family members were contacted through her phone. They verified her identity. The police said the reason for the alleged suicide was not known yet.

The victim’s mother told the police that her daughter had gone missing from the house at 3 pm. She said she called up her daughter at about 8 pm and she replied that she would return home soon. The victim’s mother said she made calls to their relatives and the girl’s classmates but could not know her whereabouts. She later got a phone call to inform that her daughter had set herself ablaze.
