For the first time, the local Municipal Corporation today fined Jaypee Rs 13 lakh for not processing the entire waste and throwing it in the dumping ground, causing inconvenience to Dadu Majra residents.

While releasing the tipping fee to Jaypee today, the MC charged the firm Rs 13 lakh for not processing the entire municipal waste. The total pending tipping fee from July 24 till September was Rs 54 lakh. The MC today released Rs 41 lakh to the company after deducting a penalty of Rs 13 lakh in line with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order, a senior MC official said.

On July 24, the NGT had asked Jaypee to accept municipal waste up to 450 metric tonne daily at its garbage processing plant in Dadu Majra and in case of failure to do so pay Rs 50,000 each day as environmental compensation after one month. The company was entitled to a tipping fee of Rs 500 per metric tonne from the corporation. Officials said they would urge the tribunal to lower the tipping fee as it was too high. During the last hearing, the officials had told the tribunal that they were ready continued on page 5C fines Jaypee  Rs 13 lakh to make the payment, but the Audit Department had raised objections. The tribunal had then asked the auditor to appear on October 24 while asking the civic body to make the payment.

The auditor will appear before the tribunal over the objections. Meanwhile, as per the court orders, the company has set up a compost plan at Dadu Majra, which is being run on a trial basis. With this, the biodegradable waste will not be thrown in the dumping ground.

This will be a respite for Dadu Majra residents, who had to bear with the foul smell.

Col KJS Sandhu (retd), in-charge of the Jaypee plant, claims that they are accepting the entire municipal waste, but the MC and residents maintain that more than half of the garbage is not being processed and is being thrown in the dumping ground.
