Cigarette vendor murdered in Sec 17

CHANDIGARH: A 22-year-old roadside cigarette vendor was murdered by two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths in Sector 17 during the wee hours of yesterday. The victim was attacked by the assailants after which he was hospitalised where he succumbed to his injury.

A 22-year-old roadside cigarette vendor was murdered by two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths in Sector 17 during the wee hours of yesterday. The victim was attacked by the assailants after which he was hospitalised where he succumbed to his injury.

According to the police, the victim has been identified as Mohammad Nazid, a native of Uttar Pradesh. The police said the accused used to sell cigarettes outside the ISBT in Sector 17 at night. 

On June 5, around 3 am, two youths riding a motorcycle came to purchase cigarettes from the victim. 

The victim and the youths entered into an altercation over some issue after which the victim refused to give them cigarettes. The police said the youth who was riding pillion attacked the victim with some weapon on the chest. The injury could be that of a bullet. “The victim fell unconscious after which the youths sped away from the spot,” said a police official. 

The injured was rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, where he succumbed to his injury. Inspector Ranjeet Singh, SHO of the Sector 17 police station, said it was yet to be established as to what weapon was used in the crime. 

The SHO said a case of murder had been registered against unknown persons at the Sector 17 police station. 

Cops fail to check vendors

Roadside tea and cigarette vendors sit throughout the night on the road outside the ISBT in Sector 17 and the Sector 22 market opposite the bus stand. The police have failed to check them. — TNS
