A Sector 33-based chemist has been arrested by the UT police for allegedly possessing 626 bottles of syrup and 400 banned tablets that were seized from his Toyota Corolla. An amount of Rs 1.17 lakh was also found in the car.

The chemist has been identified as 46-year-old Harjot Singh, who owns a shop, Satnam Medicos, in booth number 4 in Sector 33-D. The police had a tip-off that he was involved in selling banned substances to drug addicts in the city.

A team of the Sector 34 police station, led by ASP (South) Neha Yadav, carried out a search of the car at the parking lot in Sector 33. The banned items were recovered from the boot of the car. The chemist could not produce any licence regarding the items.

The police said an amount of nearly Rs 1.17 lakh was also recovered from his car. “The car was used to sell drugs. Drug addicts, especially youths residing in PGs, used to come to the parking lot and the chemist used to provide them syrups and tablets lying in the car,” said a police official.

While a syrup bottle, costing around Rs 100, was sold for Rs 200 to the addicts, a strip of tablets was sold for around Rs 100. The car has been impounded by the police.

The police said drug Inspector Sarika Malik visited the spot after the recovery of the syrups and tablets.

The chemist has been remanded in three-day police custody. “The nexus between the supplier of banned substances and the seller is yet to be explored,” said a police official.
