Chaos at railway station

I am a resident of Sector 47-C. This morning, I visited the Chandigarh railway station to receive my mother. There was a complete mismanagement at the station. There was a chaos of vehicles and pedestrians walking and running all around. There were no separate lanes for pedestrians to walk and no lanes for cab and auto-richshaw drivers. Moreover, the single lane road was blocked by some taxi and auto drivers who were seen bargaining. I had to wait for long to get out of the station due to the chaos of vehicles and pedestrians. The Administration should copy its model of traffic management at the airport here also. There should be deployment of staff to handle such a situation. Strict enforcement of law and order is also needed.

Paying challans a double punishment?

Apropos the news report ‘Paying traffic challans uphill task’ (Chandigarh Tribune, June 13), it truly goes on to reveal some highly sorry state of affairs at the Traffic Lines in Sector 29 in Chandigarh where affected citizens may be obliged to visit to pay up their traffic challans. Needless to say, with such an archaic infrastructure, highly lackadaisical approach, inadequacy of staff and number of counters, apart from some loopholes that reportedly facilitate an easy jumping of long queues, the ordinary mortals might end up being punished twice in terms of ‘time and money’ both. It may also be significant to add that the well known ‘stubbornness’ on the part of the on-field traffic police personnel hardly leaves any room for any person (allegedly involved in the violation of the city’s traffic laws) to explain his side of the story, howsoever true it may be. That’s really unfortunate, to say the least. For sure, something must be done to reasonably redress the genuine grievances of the hapless citizens who may be left with no option but to go solely by the ‘on the spot’ verdict of the ‘on duty’ traffic policeman in such circumstances. However, till such time the introduction of the e-challan system with an option of on-the-spot digital payment becomes a reality, the police authorities should favourably consider reverting back to the earlier system which facilitated ‘on-the-spot’ cash payment for any traffic violations so as to supplement the existing ‘inappropriate” arrangements at the Traffic Lines in Sector 29.
