Chandigarh, July 12

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday filed a challan against three persons, including a Chandigarh Police sub-inspector (SI) and constable, in a bribery case.

The challan against SI Sewa Singh, constable Sumit and middleman Ajay was filed under Sections 7, 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act as well as under Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

CBI officials had arrested the two policemen for allegedly taking Rs 5,000 bribe at the Industrial Area police station in May this year.

Later, middleman Ajay was also arrested for negotiating the deal.

Munna Singh, who worked at a printing press in the Industrial Area, had filed a complaint, requesting legal action against the police officials who demanded money from him.

Munna alleged that on 12 May, Sewa Singh along with other policemen came to his press and asked for his motorcycle. They told him that on May 6, he had had jumped a red light and did not stop even after he was indicated to do so. He was allegedly told that his motorbike would be impounded and he would be arrested.

The middleman, Ajay, is said to have asked the complainant to go to the police station and settle the matter. He did so but a trap was laid by then as he had already approached the CBI. The recorded conversation then revealed that Munna was not only abused but also threatened with arrest besides impounding his motorcycle.
