Winters don’t make it easy for public transport services, especially Railways. Three trains arrived late at the Chandigarh railway station while Paschim Express, a superfast express train that runs between Bandra Terminus and Amritsar, departed 15 minutes late from the local railway station.

Deputy station superintendent Nirmal Singh told The Tribune that train No. 5011, arriving from Lucknow, and train No. 15903, arriving from Dibrugarh, were late by three hours, while train No. 4217, coming from Allahabad, was running late by seven hours.

When contacted, station director Hardeep Kumar said, “In winters, it gets foggy, which causes the delay. The loco pilot has to drive slowly in such a situation. Also, at times, the tracks are blocked by the Engineering Department for maintenance.”

“As trains run at the speed of 120 km/hr, it becomes necessary to assure that the track is in good condition, else the train will get derailed. That possibly could have amounted to the delay,” he added.
