Asma Jahangir remembered

CHANDIGARH:Prof Chaman Lal, former president, Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers Association (JNUTA), said Asma was given the title of 'Lioness of Punjab' by people when she began her struggle against the dictatorial regime of Zia ul Haq at the young age of 20.

Prof Chaman Lal, former president, Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers Association (JNUTA), said Asma was given the title of 'Lioness of Punjab' by people when she began her struggle against the dictatorial regime of Zia ul Haq at the young age of 20.

He was speaking during a meeting organised to pay tributes to her.

"She had many firsts to her credit. She was the first to form the Pakistan Human Rights Commission and was its first secretary general. She was also the first to form an organization, DASTAK, which is a home to deserted women. She formed a legal aid society for the first time in Pakistan," said Prof Chaman Lal.

Roshan Lal Moudgil, general secretary, All-India Peace and Solidarity Organisation, welcomed the speakers and participants.
