Ambala, February 19

The cash-strapped Ambala Municipal Corporation has decided to initiate action against property tax defaulters.

There are around 1.75 lakh registered properties in 20 wards under the Municipal Corporation. While 11 of the wards belong to Ambala City, nine are in Ambala cantonment.

The MC has prepared a list of defaulters. The MC is to recover around Rs 36 crore from them. Sources said the MC Commissioner had written DO (demi-official) letters to various government, who failed to deposit their tax.

Due to a lack of funds, the corporation has not been able to release salaries to its staff following which sanitation workers had struck work several times.

Satinder Siwatch, Joint Commissioner, Ambala Municipal Corporation, said “Property tax is one of the main sources of revenue for a civic body. Around Rs 36 crore is yet to be recovered against properties in Ambala City and Ambala Cantonment. The annual income of the corporation is around Rs 52 crore and the expenses are almost equal. Since people don’t pay their taxes on time, the MC is facing a fund crunch. Taxes will be recovered from all. No exemption will be given.”

“A list of defaulters has been prepared and notices are being sent to them. Two separate teams have been constituted for Ambala City and Ambala Cantonment for the collection of the tax. There is a non-plan liability of more than Rs 4 crore per month in the form of salaries, pensions and other expenses on the corporation and it has been decided to pay more attention to revenue generation and tax collection. We will initiate action against defaulters if they failed to pay property tax,” he added.
